Open Letter to the Montreal Police from Independent Media Institutions Independent media institutions in Montreal condemn the arrest of independent journalist Stefan Christoff.
Montreal, December 2007:
On Tuesday November 27th, Montreal police arrested independent reporter Stefan Christoff as he left a demonstration in front of the Montreal Congress Centre. Christoff was reporting on the protests, which took place at the Montreal hearings of the Bouchard-Taylor Commission on 'reasonable accommodation'.
Christoff is a respected Montreal journalist who reports regularly in Canadian and Quebec publications and on Montreal radio. His articles on poverty in Quebec, on the Middle East, and Quebec immigration issues have been distributed widely throughout North America.
Witnesses at the event attest that several police officers tackled the reporter to the ground then proceeded to take him into custody. Christoff was subsequently charged with two separate counts of assault, including one count of assault with a 'weapon' and 'disturbing the peace'. Christoff categorically denies these allegations and witnesses to the event claim that this was a peaceful demonstration in which both the elderly and children were present.
The very serious nature of the criminal charges brought against Stefan Christoff, if unsubstantiated, can only be seen as a blatant attempt to stifle Christoff's voice as a ground-breaking independent journalist and social justice activist in Montreal. We express particular concern that multiple witness accounts indicate that Christoff was arrested as he left the event, and that he was targeted for arrest.
The targeting and harassment of any journalist by police is unacceptable. Christoff's record as a journalist and social justice advocate in Montreal is in the public record. We demand that the charges brought against Stefan Christoff be dropped.

Plusieurs médias indépendants montréalais condamnent l'arrestation du journaliste indépendant Stefan Christoff.
Montréal, décembre 2007
Le mardi 27 novembre 2007, la police de Montréal a arrêté le journaliste indépendant Stefan Christoff au moment où il quittait une manifestation publique se déroulant devant le Palais des Congrès de Montréal, dans le cadre de latenue des audiences de la Commission Bouchard-Taylor sur les accommodements raisonnables.
Stefan Christoff agissait à titre de journaliste pendant cette manifestation. Sa tâche visait à rendre compte des protestations qui se sont tenues lors des audiences montréalaises de cette Commission.
Stefan Christoff est un journaliste reconnu et respecté au sein des médias montréalais. Son travail l'amène à publier ses reportages dans plusieurs publications québecoises et canadiennes de mê me que sur les ondes radio de la région de Montréal. Ses articles sur la pauvreté au Québec, sur la situation au Moyen-Orient et sur les enjeux de l'immigration dans la province ont été largement diffusés â travers l'Amérique du Nord.
Des témoins de son arrestation ont affirmé que les policiers ont brutalisé le journaliste en l'immobilisant au sol dans le but de le détenir par la suite.
M. Christoff voit aujourd'hui porter contre lui deux chefs de voies de faits, une accusation de troubler la paix ainsi qu'une accusation de voie de fait armé.
Stefan Christoff nie catégoriquement ces allégations. Les témoins de l'évènement affirment qu'il s'agissait d'une manifestation pacifique à laquelle prenaient part des enfants et des personnes âgèes.
L'importance des accusations portées contre M. Christoff, et ce, sans fondement, peuvent seulement se traduire par une tentative ouverte de faire taire ce journaliste et activiste impliqué au sein des causes de justice sociale à Montréal. Nous sommes inquiets d'entendre les commentaires des témoins de cette arrestation lorsque ceux-ci spècifient que Stefan Christoff a été arrêté au moment où il quittait la manifestation. De plus, nous sommes inquiets de constater qu'il s'agissait d'une arrestation, de toute évidence, ciblée.
Le ciblage et le harcèlement de tout journaliste par la police sont inacceptables. Le travail de Stefan Christoff en tant que journaliste et défenseur des droits et de la justice sociale à Montréal est publiquement reconnu.
Pour toutes ces raisons, nous demandons que les accusations portées contre Stefan Christoff soient abandonnées.
