Off the Hour / June 16th, 5-6 pm / Activists call for changes in Immigration detention in Ontario after the death of a migrant
Today on the program, last week a man held in Lindsay, Ontario prison, died in mysterious conditions. Following this tragic event, the End Immigration Detention Network is asking Ontario government to cut ties with the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA). We’ll be joined live by Tings Chak to speak about the conditions that migrant detainees often face in Canada’s jails.
Then, every year the City of Montreal launches a program in June and July to help low-income families with housing needs in time for the July 1st Moving Day. CKUT’s Kateryna Gordiychuk discussed this issue with Emilie Joly, a Community Organizer at Front d’Action Populaire en Reamenagement Urbain, or FRAPRU.
Then, Bill C-24 passed last year. CKUT’s Anouk Millet spoke with Josh Patterson, executive director of the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, as well as Lalo, a member of the migrant worker activist group Fuerza Puwersa, to get a critical perspective on this law.
