Phillipe Couillard’s new Quebec Liberal government is expected to announce its first budget within the next few weeks. In anticipation of this event, a major social housing and homelessness rights demonstration was held in Quebec City last Friday, May 16th. CKUT’s Susan Fitch was there and brings us this report.

Extrajudicial killings, illegal arrests, and intimidation are among the realities faced by human rights defenders everyday in the Philippines. And in the aftermath of the devastating typhoon that hit the southeast Asian country in November, the Filipino government under President Aquino is repressing dissent and keeping the people in abject poverty. That’s what Marie Hilao, secretary general of the Filipino human rights group Karapatan, told CKUT’s David Koch.
