Your Radio's On (But Nobody's Home) September 2021 Update

In August we surveyed our programmers and asked them about several aspects related to the idea of re-opening CKUT studios in some capacity.

If you are a programmer, your department coordinator (Jack or Alex) will have sent you (via the results of the survey and a detailed statement from CKUT’s Steering Committee.

Below is a condensed version of this statement:

In short, we will not be reopening the station to programmers and volunteers at this time. We’ve made this decision with heavy hearts because we collectively feel that we cannot reopen in a way that is safe for our programmers and staff. We are monitoring the situation elsewhere in Montreal and at other campus/community stations, and we are constantly reevaluating this position because we are all eager to get back in the studios. We will let you know as soon as anything changes.

We will be observing how the citywide September experiments with reopening affect transmission and will continually be evaluating our approach.McGill University will be experimenting with only 30% capacity, and their buildings have been fortified with 24/7 security, cleaning staff, and industrial ventilation systems, all of which CKUT does not have access to.

We will continue to support our programmers broadcasting from home and live remote special programming. Please reach out to Spencer at if you need any help whatsoever with your remote broadcasting.

Thanks for sticking with us.

As an alternative media outlet, we will continue to provide a platform for communities that have been misrepresented or underrepresented in the mainstream media during this global crisis, as per our mandate.
