Funky Revolutions

on CKUT 90.3 FM Samedi 14:00-16:00.

“Up on the down. Down on the beat. The funk of the slaveships become the sound in the street. The funk in the strength in the funk of the weak. The funk in the word when you decide to speak.” - The Last Poets, FUNK.

Funky Revolutions is based on the One. Since 1994, host, Khalid, and guests, have invited you to groove & celebrate the history of Africana music - the African diaspora and its musical reflections around the world.

We explore the past, present and future of the funk. From introducing trip-hop to Montreal in the early 90’s, to supporting hip-hop’s underground, to presenting ethno-musicographies of jazz, soul, reggae and afro-funk, Funky Revolutions embraces all grooves & the revolutionary spirit of the Funk, from the Black Arts Movement of the 70s to Indigenous defiances & liberations in the (post) colonial world.

Interested in funk, neo-soul and R&B from the underground? Tune in Saturday’s 2-4 pm.

“Free your mind and our collective ass will follow”. Thank you Funkadelic.

Gotsoul Sessions / Funky Revolutions

is not currently scheduled.

Funky Revolutions exposes and explores groove music through the framework and concepts of funk music and its spirit of revolution. The show aims to present all forms of funky music from around the world, to produce relevant cross-cultural and creative alternative radio programming, and to provide an interesting framework for the expression of grass roots voices for change within the contexts of revolution. Funky Revolutions is for those who love to drive, love to dance, and just like to sit back and let the rhythm flow through their souls. The goal of this program is to trace the course of the funk movement: original funk in the 1970s; techno, hip hop, and progressive rock of the 1980s and 90s; and contemporary acid jazz and trip hop movements. Funky Revolutions is on the airwaves every Saturday from 14:00-16:00.

Listen! You Smell Something?

on CKUT 90.3 FM Vendredi 1:00-4:00.

Feels like 1976… 3 hours a week of straight funk by the earful / noseful, with all the necessary side steps into blues and soul down the buffet line. Old school by trade, showcasing equal parts classic, dusty and buried grooves, with a soft spot for blaxploitation soundtracks. Drizzled with offbeat repartee and the occasional conspiracy report.

Good for mild to moderate ennui as well as stiffness of the neck and feet.

Featuring Logic Johnson & The Derfman, catch Listen! You Smell Something? live Thursday nights 1:00-4:00am.

WEFUNK is a weekly radio mix-show. DJ Static and Professor Groove began broadcasting WEFUNK to Montreal in 1996. Early in 1999 WEFUNK began webcasting and archiving their shows online, and the world got their taste of the WEFUNK sound. iTunes started syndicating their radio stream in 2001, giving WEFUNK a lot more worldwide exposure. Since then they’ve been doin› their thing, searching out new grooves to make you move, recording hundreds more weekly shows and building up the website. Montreal’s bumpin› WEFUNK every Friday night on CKUT, and you can catch the 24/7 on wefunkradio.com.

WEFUNK celebrates a lineage of powerful, inspired music. The roots of soul, funk and rapping go back way further than the 70s, but something special began when James Brown gave the drummer some, Larry Graham hit the bass harder, Kool Herc gave the dancers breaks, DJ Hollywood worked the mic… and musicians worldwide found the funk seeping through their walls and into their music. Strong music gave a strong foundation to speak on social problems, relationships, politics and living conditions. And it made one hell of a party groove. Funk gave birth to hip-hop, and as the past grew into the present funk and hip-hop touched every modern music, leaving their mark—a swagger, a groove, mo› bounce… and something to twist your face and nod your head to. You know it when you hear it. And they play it on WEFUNK. Catch WEFUNK Fridays midnight-2:00am every week.
