What does Canada mean to those who originally inhabited this land? What does Canadian foreign intervention mean to those in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Haiti? Join CKUT's Community News Collective from 7-9am and later in the day from 5-6pm on Tuesday, July 1 to hear perspectives on Indigenous-settler relations, what it is to be Canadian, and critical views on Canadian foreign policy to break open the truth on Canada's colonial past, and present, here on Turtle Island. Plus, tune in to Montreal Sessions, 3-5pm for anti-colonial themes put to music! We will be hearing musical selections from the likes of Propagandhi, Rhythm Activism, Nomadic Massive, Muzion, A Silver Mount Zion, and others. Music reflecting on indigenous issues, imperialism, workers' struggles, police brutality, and the darker parts of Canada's history. Music to inspire rebellion. Or dancing. Or both. QUEBEC + YIDDISH + 400 = SHTETL Monday, June 30 at 11am, Shtetl on the Shortwave celebrates Quebec's 400th birthday and Jewish culture in Montreal. Listen for the program's first ever interview in French, about the Yiddish play The Wize Men of Chelm. There's also an interview in English with director Shelley Tepperman about her French documentary on the history of Jews in Quebec city. Music will be in Hebrew, Yiddish and English - all from folks at the Jazz Fest. VICTORIOUS AND INVINCIBLE: NOW "THE KITCHEN BANG-BANG LAW!" A note to listeners that Victorious and Invincible has changed its name to the Kitchen Bang-Bang Law, after longtime host and programmer "Victorious" Victoria Stanton has had to leave the program permanently. Tune in on Tuesdays from 12-2pm for the same 2 great hours of open-format music and discussion, which will continue to be hosted by "Invincible" Vince Tinguely! RADIO SANCTUARY 21 Friday, June 20th, from 5-6pm CKUT and Kader present a live, hour-long remote broadcast from St. Gabriel's Church. Abdelkader Belaouni ("Kader" to his friends) is a refugee from Algeria who came to Montreal via the USA. Kader defied an order to be deported on January 5, 2006, and has remained in sanctuary ever since. Kader is in sanctuary inside the St-Gabriel's Catholic Church in his community of Point St-Charles -- a mixed French-English poor working class neighborhood of Montreal, with a long history of community mobilization. Since Kader cannot leave the church, CKUT joins him in sanctuary. Join us for this bilingual (English and French) program. ONE NIGHT BAND Tune into Roots Rock Rebel on Wednesday, June 18 from 10pm-12am for an interview with members of One Night Band, one of Montreal's hottest ska and reggae bands! ONB currently have one full-length album out on Stomp Records, and they are currently in the studio recording their second album, due out in September. Gracing the controls in the studio is none other than Brian Dixon, who is a contemporary ska legend in his own right, and is currently playing rhythm guitar for the L.A skinhead-reggae outfit The Aggrolites. One Night Band are an eclectic band who sing in French and English, and their influences range from Ken Boothe to Aretha Franklin to the Specials. Check them out here.
