Funky Revolutions is based on the One. Since 1994, host Khalid and guests have invited you to groove & celebrate the history of Africana music - the African diaspora and its musical reflections around the world.

We explore the past, present and future of the funk. From introducing trip-hop to Montréal in the early 90’s, to supporting hip-hop’s underground, to presenting ethno-musicographies of jazz, soul, reggae and afro-funk, Funky Revolutions embraces all grooves & the revolutionary spirit of the Funk, from the Black Arts Movement of the 70s to Indigenous defiances & liberations in the (post) colonial world.

Every Saturday 2 - 4pm (EST)

Favoriting May 6, 2023: Their Music Was Hot (Carnal Female Funk from the 1970s Pt 2)

Rebroadcast of our part 2 of our tribute to Betty Davis. “I would just say it was raw.” - Betty Davis Funky Revolutions presents the hardest funk by women who affirmed and expressed their sexuality in their own music and on their own terms. With roots in the bawdy blues, singer-songwriter-producers like Betty Davis, Lalomie Washburn, and Sylvia Robertson embraced and gave form to libidinal and sensual funk & soul in the 1970s that broke barriers and had unrecognized impacts on the evolution of the funk and the performance of popular music. Pure belly rub at the heart of the beat and groove. In tribute to Betty Davis who passed away February 9, 2022 at the age of 77. "I'm me and I'm different; my music is just another level of funk.” - Betty Davis
