February 14, 2024: A personal exploration of Black music history from the past six decades by somebody3lse
Inspired by a visit from my parents I decided to dedicate this show to my musical influences growing up in London. Being February we curated a selection of music by Black artists. You will find the influences showing up in the electronic music that comes later on.
Some of my earliest memories involved attending rock against racism concerts, the first in 1978. I was raised to see music as a crucial form of political expression and resistance.
Before I fell for house music I was in love with hip-hop - and at 15 I had Public Enemy and De La Soul posters in my wall.
Some of these records are as old as me and have been in our family for 5 decades - so they have degraded a bit… but like my wrinkles that’s part of their charm.
