September 3, 2024: Interview w/Writer & Mental Health Advocate Tony Weaver Jr
Tony Weaver, Jr. is an acclaimed writer and educator celebrated for his efforts to create diverse stories that help young people feel seen and valued. Witnessing the negative impact of media stereotypes on students in his community, Tony embarked on a mission to challenge these narratives and offer more inclusive representations.
His debut graphic novel, Weirdo, is a deeply personal and humorous exploration of his own experiences growing up as a self-identified "weird kid." In this middle-grade memoir, eleven-year-old Tony grapples with being bullied and feeling out of place while finding solace in his love for comic books, anime, and video games. After a traumatic event shakes his sense of self, he sets out on a transformative journey toward self-love and acceptance.
Weirdo is both a witty and heartwarming story that resonates with any child who has ever felt awkward or left out. As an adolescent survival guide, it empowers readers to embrace their individuality and find confidence in their own unique paths, making it a compelling read for fans of Jerry Craft's New Kid.
Tune in live, this and every Tuesday evening from 7-8.30pm ESTon www.ckut.ca or 90.3FM on your radio dial in Montreal.
