November 19, 2024: Interview w/Stephen Ong of LeCypherX
This evening's guest is Vincent Stephen-Ong, a Montreal-based saxophonist and pianist, known for leading innovative musical projects under the Urban Science umbrella. His work pushes the boundaries of hip-hop through groups like LeCypherX, Urban Science Brass Band, and the LabX Workshops series. Since 2014, LeCypherX has become a cornerstone of Montreal’s hip-hop scene, hosting a weekly event that attracts hundreds of people, and featuring unique live performances blending virtuosity and improvisation. As a bandleader, Vincent strives to create dynamic, engaging experiences that keep dancefloors alive while challenging the conventions of hip-hop. Through LeCypherX's growing focus on original music, and initiatives like the LeCypher X2 project, which offers a 4-hour immersive musical journey, Vincent continues to redefine the genre and inspire a new wave of performers and fans.
The Urban Science Brass Band takes hip-hop to the streets with an electrifying twist—reinterpreting hip-hop classics with the raw intensity of a New Orleans-style brass band. Featuring instruments like trumpets, saxophones, trombones, sousaphones, and tubas, this dynamic ensemble brings an unmatched energy to live performances. Their repertoire spans from iconic tracks by Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar to their own original compositions, blending marching band rhythms, multilingual MCs, and street dancers into a high-energy spectacle. Whether performing in parade format or on stage, the band creates an interactive experience that engages the audience and creates a unique sense of community. The Urban Science Brass Band’s blend of brass and hip-hop has made them a standout group in Montreal’s vibrant music scene, captivating audiences around the world with their one-of-a-kind shows.
Vincent talks with us about the impact of Black music on his career, the influence of Kalmunity Vibe Collective and discovering that the secret to a good meal is a great chef. Join us this Tuesday, November 19 from 7pm-8.30pm on CKUT 90.3FM or www.ckut.ca.
