Favoriting September 21, 2016: How to make society more family-friendly

Tonight on In The Motherhood on CKUT 90.3FM at 6PM

They say to raise a child it takes a village and yet as parents we look around and wonder where and how we are supposed to find these villages. Most of us are in same boat and yet we often feel a loneliness and exhaustion as though we were on a solo journey.

The reality of our modern times is that in typical households parents and children face increasingly longer days, at work, school or daycare and time for families to spend together, even on the most mundane tasks, is more and more fractured.

How can we re imagine society, without being regressive?

On tonight’s show we are going to look at this from a few different angles.

Joining us in the studio during the first half of our show will be Karen Coffman, educator, artist and mother. Karen will be talking with us about work family conflict, the downside of the daycare system and how to make society more family friendly.

In the 2nd half of the show we will be speaking with Jonathan Brun, the Quebec spokesperson for Basic Income Canada Network, about what our society might look like for families if every citizen had a guaranteed income.

KAREN COFFMAN possesses a Baccalaureate in communications, a masters in sociology and a short post graduate degree in pedagogy. Her masters is on the ability of theatrical techniques to influence family relational satisfaction. She taught at Champlain Regional College for the Building College Skills course and also worked at Collège Bois-de-Boulogne in communications.

Karen is also an actress, singer and songwriter and regularly gives performances for children and for adults.

Her experience as a caregiver for the SREPE (service de remplacement éducatif en petite enfance) and as a substitute in a daycare, has enabled her to understand the needs of parents, children and the society. Convinced of the critical rôle of the preschool program and its long-term impact on children's lives, Karen regularly reads up on developments in early childhood education and Quebec's childcare system. For many years Karen has also been a volunteer at the local public school either as a part of or leading the parent committee, creating innovative projects with the children or working towards creating a better environment for families and for education.
