[Vol.1] is a collection of songs carefully selected from a 5tb archive owned by Steve Kurtz (founding member of Critical Art Ensemble) alongside audio excerpts from a conversation held for a retrospective interview with H C-(M) \ José López. [Vol.1] builds an eclectic sonic journal and soundtrack to understand Steve Kurtz/Critical Art Ensemble's ethos, history and work process. This is an unusual and rare insight that celebrates the legacy and influence of one of the most important art collectives in the last 30 years. Formed in 1987, CAE’s focus has been on the exploration of the intersections between art, critical theory, technology, and political activism. The group has exhibited and performed at diverse venues internationally, ranging from the street, to the museum, to the internet. Museum exhibitions include Documenta 13, Kassel; Whitney Museum and the New Museum in NYC; Corcoran Museum, Washington D.C.; ICA, London; Seoul Museum of Art; National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto; Schirn Kunsthalle, Frankfurt; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; London Museum of Natural History; Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art, Helsinki; Matadero, Madrid; Les Abbatoirs, Toulouse; ZKM, Karlsruhe; and The Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, Moscow.
