February 7, 2023: BHM Round Table Talk Spokespersons
For the last 32 year the Black History Month Round Table @moishistoiresdesnoirs has been producing a calendar spanning from February until January of the following year, that places a spotlight on different Black figures within the Montreal Black Community from both the Francophone and Anglophone communities. For almost as long as the calendar has been available, there have been a duo of spokespersons, one representing the English the other representing the French who take centre stage for the opening month of the calendar, February, which is also internationally known as Black History Month.
This month we had the opportunity to speak with Tristan D. Lalla @tdlalla and Schelby Jean-Baptiste @schelbyjb about their journeys, as they are both actors in the English and French Film/TV industry respectively. Tristan has been in over 50 plays, musicals, and staged readings across Canada, and in 2015-16 he was one of ten Ensemble Members of Canada's National Arts Centre. His portrayal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in The Mountaintop (Black Theatre Workshop/Neptune Theatre) earned him the 2018 Montreal English Theatre Award (META) for Outstanding Lead Performance by an Actor.
Schelby is known for several roles on Television and on the big screen such as Trécee in 'Unité 9', Marie-Carmel in 'L'Heure Bleue' and Chloé in 'L'échappée', to name a few. Over the course of her career Schelby earned multiple nominations, including Best Supporting Actress at the Gala du Cinéma Québécois for her performance in 'Scratch' by Sébastien Godron and received nominations twice for Actress of the Year at the Dynasty Gala. A winner at the Gemeaux Awards, Schelby dreams big and has faith that anything is possible for those who believe.
These two amazing artists are joining us this Tuesday evening to let us know a little bit about themselves, and the significance of their role as spokespersons for the Black History Month Round Table this February. Join us on www.ckut.ca with our host, Kym Dominique-Ferguson @mrkdferguson on Tuesday February 7, 2023 from 7-8.30pm EST or on 90.3 on your FM dial.
