Favoriting August 6, 2024: Interview with an Artist & Organizer at Island Fête this Aug 10 & 11

The upbeat sounds and vibrant flavours of the Caribbean are set to take centre stage in Pierrefonds with the highly anticipated return of Island Fête this weekend. After the resounding success of last year’s 1-day Island Fête, the West Island’s first Caribbean food and arts festival, Overture with the Arts (OWTA) is thrilled to announce that the event will now include two days of programming. This year’s festival will take place at À-Ma-Baie Park on Saturday, August 10, and Sunday, August 11, 2024, from 12:00pm to 9:00pm.

Island Fête will feature live music, cultural performances, and activities for all ages. Guests can dance and fête to reggae, soca, and calypso while enjoying live performances from headliners Waahli and DJ Blaster, and other talented artists including Salah & Family Steelpan Workshop, Jab Djab, King Shadrock, as well as Révélation Radio-Canada 2015 en musique du monde recipient, Sam.iito. Attendees will be able to immerse themselves in the different English, French, and Spanish-speaking Caribbean Islands cultures thanks to the diverse lineup of performers and DJs.

In addition to the rich selection of entertainment, Guests can indulge in spicy and savoury dishes as well as sweet and tropical ones as they feast on an array of meals prepared by renowned local Caribbean restaurants. From jerk-infused delights to patties, roti and griot, the enticing menu options will highlight the unique blend of cultures that define Caribbean cuisine.

One of Island Fête’s feature performers takes the stage at just 17 years old. Maeesha B an R&B singer/songwriter/rapper has already forged a one-of-a-kind musical identity, and with the release of her debut EP “If Only U Knew,” she is ready to make an indelible mark on the music scene.

Hailing from Canada’s capital, Ottawa, Maeesha’s fierce dedication and passion for music have laid a solid foundation for her to create music that is fresh and original. Her ability to interpret and express complex feelings through her voice reflects a powerful artistry that is as intriguing as it is dynamic.  Maeesha's French heritage, which she skillfully injects into her music, adds a unique layer of cultural richness and diversity to her sound, further enhancing her artistry and appeal.

One member of the team that created the Island Fête is Akilah Newton, an activist, entrepreneur and author. She has always had a fascination with the arts and pursued her passion by studying Creative Arts at John Abbott College. In 2003 she moved to England to attend the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and earned a BA in Arts, Music & Entertainment Management. After 3 years in Liverpool she returned to Montreal, then in 2009, she founded a non-profit organization for artistically-inclined youth called Overture with the Arts (OWTA) to make the arts accessible to youth from all walks of life.

She is also the founder of Big Dreamers; a company that celebrates diversity in ethnicity, gender and orientation through literature, games and art activities and supplies. Between 2018 Akilah co-wrote and self-published the children’s book Big Dreamers: The Canadian Black History Activity Book for Kids Volumes 1 and 2. These books highlight the achievements of Black Canadians whose stories are often left untold. There are now more than 15 books and products in the Big Dreamers catalogue and there are several other launches this year, including Big Dreamers: The International Women's Black History Activity Book for Kids Volume 3, a plush doll and more!

Join us this Tuesday August 6 from 7-8.30pm for an in-depth interview with Maeesha B and Akilah Newton on 90.3FM or www.ckut.ca
