October 15, 2024: Interview with Spoken Word Aritst & Business Man Dwayne Morgan
This week’s guest spends some time with us on his birthday to talk about his journey as one of Canada’s top Spoken Word Artists and Businessman! Happy Birthday good sir!
Dwayne Morgan @dwayne_morgan is a 2023 appointee of the Order of Ontario and a two-time Canadian National Poetry Slam Champion. He began his spoken word career in 1993 and founded Up From The Roots entertainment in 1994 to promote African Canadian and urban artists. Morgan has received numerous accolades, including recognition by Shifter Magazine as one of Canada’s outstanding Black men and the Toronto Arts Foundation’s Celebration of Cultural Life award.
Morgan has performed for notable figures like Barack Obama and shared the stage with artists such as Alicia Keys and Drake. He has published fourteen collections, including two children’s books, and has released ten albums, including a spoken word Christmas album. His work has also been translated into French with Le Making of d’un Homme.
In addition to his literary accomplishments, Morgan produced the ten-minute film Three Knocks and created the TV shows Poetically Speaking and Write in Toronto. His one-man play, Grade 8, is featured on CBC’s PlayMe Podcast. Morgan has performed internationally and co-produced the inaugural Toronto Spoken Soul Festival in 2019, solidifying his status in the global spoken word scene.
