Listen to this show: Pop-up listenListen | Download

Tonight on Cha Cha Cha In Blue we see the shapes of things to come - singles from upcoming albums by Tommy Talton, Ben Brandt, Robert Finley, Mavis Staples, and Miss Emily plus a new single from Chris Rand and the Heavy Echo. Dropping a new single would have earned a slot in that set for Joe Bonamassa but when you drop the first series of five singles from a giant B.B. King centennial birthday tribute with the promise of lots more to come before the February release, well, you get your own slot. Two this week, the other three before the next drop. This week's featured new releases are a Delmark double feature from Mississippi Heat and Jimmy Burns & Soul Message Band. The "history" set starts in 1923 with Bessie Smith and continues with Blind Lemon Jefferson, Joe Hill Louis, Howlin' Wolf, Pete "Guitar" Lewis, Herb Ellis & Stuff Smith, Ray Charles, Kirk Fletcher with Jackie Payne, and Gary Primich. We'll close with a song from Rob Lutes who is getting the band back together to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of his first album Gravity on Friday at Espace Knox.

Talk Time ID         82 year old Jimmy Burns’ early 45 rpm records have become collectors' items, originally released as 45 rpm vinyl split singles (with two songs), some tunes written by Jimmy, others were composed by historical music industry writers and recorded for now long-gone labels. On this album, there is one original song by a very youthful Jimmy Burns, It Use To Be (1966), and there are four songs he recorded over the years: Give Her To Me (1965), Where Does That Leave Me (71-72), I Really Love You (1972), and Too Much Lovin', from Delmark’s “Night Time Again” album (1999). Jimmy also proposed a list of songs he always liked; songs that bring back nice warm memories.

Jimmy Burns & Soul Message Band  Express Yourself   Favoriting Full Circle  Delmark Records  2025  “Charles Wright wrote that one, I heard it in 1970. He came from where I’m from too, the area around Clarksdale, Mississippi. He didn’t have the greatest voice in the world, but he was super funky. I always liked a good writer. He had a couple of big hits, and I always liked him. I think it was a good fit for this album.”

Jimmy Burns & Soul Message Band  World Of Trouble   Favoriting Full Circle  Delmark Records  2025  “I heard that on a record and I fell in love with it. Big Joe Turner was always one of my idols. I listened to him for the first time on a jukebox, back in Mississippi. I went with all my family to see him at the old Regal, in 1961. David Ruffin was also singing there, before joining the Temptations. That was even before Motown.”
