Favoriting June 9, 2024: FESTIVAL SUR LE CANAL! NEW RELEASES! This Week In Blues History! Where It's At!

Listen to this show: Pop-up listenListen | Download

Tonight on Cha Cha Cha In Blue we start with the "blues contingent" of the Festival Sur Le Canal, namely the Justin Saladino Band, Dawn Tyler Watson, and the Durham County Poets. I'm still swamped with new releases so I'll play one each from the new discs by The Reverend Shawn Amos, Jeff Pitchell, Jennifer Lyn & The Groove Revival, Val Starr & the Blues Rocket, Gary Cain, Misty Blues, Eliza Neals, Toronzo Cannon, Campbell & Johnston, and Sugaray Rayford. In the "history" part of the show I've got Bessie Smith, Eddie Lang & Lonnie Johnson, Bo Carter, The Nite Owls, Lillie Mae Kirkman, Bill Doggett, Howlin' Wolf, Matt Guitar Murphy, Monster Mike Welch. and Barrence Whitfield. We'll close with a song from Dan Livingstone in advance of his appearance at Chez Ernest on Thursday.

The Reverend Shawn Amos  Soul Brother No. 1   Favoriting Soul Brother No. 1  Immediate Family Records  2024  During Covid lockdown, Amos penned the NAACP Image Award-winning youth novel Cookies & Milk, a semi-autobiographical tale based on his latchkey kid years as the son of cookie entrepreneur Wally “Famous” Amos and nightclub chanteuse Shirley “Shirl-ee May” Ellis. Like the book’s protagonist, Ellis Johnson, Amos was a Black child of divorce with mostly white friends, struggling to find his identity in colorful-but-chaotic ‘70s Hollywood. He's also figured out that he's Soul Brother No. 1

Sugaray Rayford  Ain't That A Man featuring Sam Morrow   Favoriting Human Decency  Forty Below Records  2024  The title track of ‘Human Decency’ is a simple reminder that our similarities are stronger than our differences. “Ain’t That A Man” is a play on the Muddy Waters “Mannish Boy” lyric but instead of expressing bravado, this is a more self-deprecating POV. Album due Friday June 14.
