The Trevor B. Power Band  Going To Washington   Favoriting Are We Ever Free  Farm 189 Records  2024  New Jersey roots music maestro Trevor B. Power's latest release Are We Ever Free is a collection of eleven new original tracks and he pulls no punches on the shuffle “Going To Washington;” a great single release for this election year.

Bobby Hurricane Spencer and Jeff Dale  The Hurricane   Favoriting The Hurricane Dale Thang  Indie  2024  Bobby had a massive stroke in 2019 followed by several more medical complications the following year that hospitalized him again. He began the long hard climb to get his playing and singing chops back and the band finished recording the Hurricane Dale Thang album just months ago. This project is a testament to the healing power of music and the power of love and friendship.

Gary Myrick  Gloria   Favoriting The Sum of All My Sins  Sound of Vinyl Records  2024  Gary Myrick, Grammy nominated guitarist, singer/songwriter, and session musician, was born in Dallas, Tex. As a teenage guitarist and vocalist, he performed in Dallas and neighboring Fort Worth, eventually building a significant enough reputation to replace Stevie Ray Vaughan in the Austin band Krackerjack. He has recorded ten solo albums, performed on Late Night with David Letterman and worked on soundtracks in film and television.

On the surface a lurid R n’ B grinder suited for a steamy backseat session on a hot summer night, SLOW DRIVIN’ MAN, the fifth song in an ongoing series of cascading singles, is designed for discerning listeners not always seeking immediate gratification but yet see the value in practicing impulse control.

R.I.P. JOHN MAYALL (November 29, 1933 - July 22, 2024
Talk Time ID         John Mayall, often referred to the “godfather of the British blues,” whose bands of the late ’60s and early ‘70s featured some of the most notable rock instrumentalists of the era, died Monday July 22 at his home in California. He was 90. For championing the blues, Mayall was awarded Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire in 2005. In 2016, he was inducted into the Blues Music Hall of Fame, and more recognition came this year with his induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, alongside his British blues forebear, Alexis Korner. In addition to his own prodigious output he's best known as the finishing school for elite blues/rock guitarists Eric Clapton, Peter Green, Mick Taylor and many others.

Thanks to dedicated fan Tom Huissen who took his one channel reel-to-reel tape recorder into various London clubs in 1967, these historical performances were captured for all time. Unheard for almost fifty years, John Mayall recently obtained these tapes and began restoring them with the technical assistance of Eric Corne of Forty Below Records.

John Mayall  I'm A Sucker For Love   Favoriting Wake Up Call  Silvertone Records  1993  This song reunites Coco Montoya with another mentor Albert Collins. "I played at a jam session where John heard me. Clapton was a hero to me, and I tried to emulate him. I thought that was the job. John took me aside and said, ‘Look, where’s that guy I saw at the jam session? You’re trying to sound like Eric. You’re not Eric. Don’t forget the first law of the blues: interpretation.’

John Mayall  Distant Lonesome Train feat. Carolyn Wonderland   Favoriting Nobody Told Me  Forty Below Records  2019  I chose this tune for Carolyn's lapsteel. “It was such a musical education, as well as how to be a bandleader. He gave me board tapes of about 80 songs from different eras, and every night would be a different set; he never wanted it to be the same. And that was the same with the songs. When it came time for your solo, he’d push you until there was some spark. It’s frightening, jumping off the high dive, but it was so freeing, and he was right there behind you, ready. He made everybody reach inside to find out what your inner voice is. It’s like the graduate school of the blues that you never want to graduate from.”
