January 21, 2025: Interview with the founder of AfroQueb Karolina Biragoye
This evening's guest moved to Québec over 20 years ago, after living on the continent of Africa, in the dead of winter of March 2003. The shock of moving from tropical warmth to what most certainly felt like an Arctic landscape had an alarming impact. Karolina Biragoye found herself in a little town far outside of Montreal, where at just ten years old, she would begin to understand the impact "othering" would have on her psyché.
Navigating profound ignorance and racism, Karolina grew up secure in her African roots and languages, mastering French, with a good handle on English as well. In 2016-17 she would move to Montreal and begin working a lot within the artistic community. She could be found being an extra on different film sets, being involved in photography and modelling - generally immersing herself in the arts.
As time went by she noticed that artists who could be seen as "Afro Quebecois" did not seem to have a place of their own. This led her and a team of Afro Arts enthusiasts to found and create AfroQueb @AfroQueb an organization dedicated to fusing the Quebec and Montreal landscape with the diversity that is Afro-Ascended Artists.
Join us this and every Tuesday evening for a fascinating discussion with our guests, in particular this week's guest Karolina Biragoye @karolinabira from 7-8.30 PM EST on CKUT 90.3FM or www.ckut.ca
