CKUT is a non-profit, campus-community radio station based at McGill University. CKUT provides alternative music, news and spoken word programming to the city of Montreal, surrounding areas, & around the world 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. CKUT is made up of over 200 volunteers working with a staff of coordinators, not just to make creative and insightful radio programming, but also to manage the station. The station operates on a collective management system that includes volunteers in decision-making. As a campus / community radio station, CKUT’s mandate is to provide an essential service to those in the Montreal community whose needs are not met by mainstream commercial radio.
The Sales and Administrative Coordinator (SAC) is a full-time position (35hrs weekly at $19.83/hr). It includes a benefits package of 4 weeks paid vacation, Winter Break, 10 sick days and 3 personal days, as well an $1000 annual health stipend. Per station policy, the wage will increase either by 2% or the Quebec Consumer Price Index – whatever is higher – annually on June 1st.
The SAC is responsible for the sale of on-air advertisements and co-presentation partnerships in order to meet the station’s annual budgeted advertising revenue. The SAC must also ensure that CKUT fulfills its advertising requirements as determined by Canadian broadcast laws, CKUT’s Statement of Principles, and all internal policies, guidelines, rules, and regulations.
Sales duties include responding to requests for information, negotiating contracts and agreements, assistance in script writing, overseeing production of the advertising spots, logging of ads, invoicing, and collection. The SAC will work with CKUT’s Financial Coordinator to ensure smooth and accurate sales transactions.
The SAC (along with the Financial Coordinator) will also be responsible for administrative tasks, including overseeing the various contractual obligations of the station including but not limited to, insurance, broadcast tower and transmitter rental agreements, and contracts with McGill University.
The SAC works in conjunction with the Funding and Outreach Coordinator to negotiate sponsorship agreements for services and our prizes for CKUT’s annual funding drive. The SAC will also collaborate with the Funding & Outreach Coordinator to locate and secure funding for CKUT projects through grants. The SAC will also support the annual CKUT Funding Drive by working with programmers to coordinate special programming and events, receiving donations, and troubleshooting.
The SAC is a member of CKUT’s Steering Committee, a non-hierarchical collective management group consisting of staff and volunteers which meets weekly to organize the daily operations of the station. The Steering Committee is responsible for the overall management of the station, including human resources, financial objectives, long term visioning and yearly projects.
Working in accordance with all health regulations, CKUT staff will be expected to work from our office located at 3647 rue University in downtown Montreal, situated on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka.
Additional Duties include:
∙ Updating and maintaining tools, guidelines and manuals such as a rate sheet, media kit and other items to promote the station and publicize advertising opportunities
∙ Maintain longstanding relationships with current clients and outreach to potential new clients
∙ Developing new markets in order to significantly improve the profitability and community engagement of CKUT
∙ Consulting with the Steering Committee for any national advertising campaigns
∙ Producing contracts and/or invoices for all ad and co-presentation campaigns
∙ Creating daily advertising logs
∙ Providing clients with estimates of the costs of advertising products or services
∙ Collecting revenues owed to the station
∙ Preparing bank deposits
∙ Assisting in maintaining station records and files
∙ Participating as a member of CKUT’s Finance Committee and, as appropriate, review and approve capital expense purchases and assist in the preparation of CKUT’s annual budget
∙ Continuing relationships with local businesses and community organizations and seek to expand this network
Qualifications:
∙ Demonstrated commitment to using media as a tool to raising the voices of marginalized community members
∙ Relevant expertise in sales and market development and in the marketing of new products and services
∙ Financial literacy
∙ Ability to communicate fluently French and English, written and spoken (additional languages would be an asset)
∙ Proficiency and experience with modern computer systems and Google Suite products
∙ Experience and knowledge of Montreal’s alternative arts, cultural, and activist scenes
∙ Committed to supporting and developing a cohesive and collaborative working atmosphere
Assets:
∙ Experience and familiarity with campus/community radio stations
∙ Experience working with diverse communities with a broad spectrum of cultural backgrounds
∙ Experience working in horizontal organizing and/or collective management
∙ Excellent in-person interpersonal skills and the ability to negotiate
∙ Experience working in a not-for-profit, community organization
∙ Experience working as part of a collective in close daily collaboration with other team members
∙ Knowledge and understanding of the culture, history and current oppressions experienced by people related to race, class, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
∙ Self-motivated & willing to initiate projects and see them through
∙ Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and ability to work with a diverse demographic
∙ Demonstrated commitment to public service & advocacy
∙ Experience coordinating & inspiring volunteers and familiarity with working with community groups
∙ Ability to work under pressure & meet deadlines

∙ Experience with audio editing software and production, WordPress based websites, and familiarity with online listening platforms and libraries
