Record Review: Amber Mark – Loosies EP
Loosies – Amber Mark Ep Review
The R&B phenom blesses the fans with seven tracks ahead of her anticipated sophomore album.
Amber Mark has been in album mode for the majority of 2024. After reporting her sophomore album was complete earlier this year, fans have been eager to get their hands on this new music. Well, it’s a good time to be an Amber Mark fan because, after a slow drip of singles throughout the year, we’ve received a seven-song collection of loosies that shows promise for the upcoming project.
Let’s start with the two self-produced tracks on this project: Won’t Cry and Sink In. The former has an electronic, dance-pop beat that Amber bounds across over its runtime. The song is infectious and bursts with confidence in both its rhythm and in her voice, which carries on the dance elements that define some of Amber’s most well-known tracks. It’s evident she’s most comfortable over these kinds of instrumentals, and I feel the contrast they have with her voice helps her shine. I particularly like the track’s ending for its use of a Persian/Middle Eastern sample. If Amber’s head is in that realm of music, I’m rather excited about what sounds that crossover might bring.
Whether in a relationship, an odd situation, or getting over your ex, this EP has songs for you. Putting the past behind you? Listen to Stop Calling Me — a song I’d recommend to anyone unfamiliar with Amber’s music. City Starlight is for the infatuated; this song could soundtrack a cute downtown date, maybe a late-night city drive — especially in a city like Montreal. For that friend with embarrassingly low standards, A Little More has words to live by and a beat that’ll keep you coming back. For you lovebirds, Destiny’s Child is for you. Amber’s voice is at its best on this track, and it would be perfect for your intimate playlist if it weren’t only a minute and sixteen seconds – though that may not be an issue for some of you.
The only dud on this project is Wait So Yeah. While I see the appeal, I’m not a fan of the chorus as it feels too pop-y in an unoriginal way. It doesn’t showcase why Amber has built such a loyal fanbase over her young career.
This EP makes me very excited for what’s coming next from Amber. She’s truly got a pulse on what feels good to listen to and proves it every time. My must-listen track is Won’t Cry. The Queen’s pick is the whole EP because Amber is for the bad bitches.
Safe, YH
