REVIEW: OKAY KAYA @ THÉÂTRE FAIRMOUNT

On September 7th at Théâtre Fairmount, Okay Kaya graced Montréal with her lyrical excellence and laid-back attitude. Celebrating the recent release of her new album, Oh My God- That’s So Me, Okay Kaya offered a mixture of new music and older favorites.

Opening with “Baked Bean”, Kaya began with a slow lullaby and eventually built up to astrong, soulful outcry. As gold lights beamed through the theatre, Kaya’s voice emanated through the crowd, soothing and pure. The audience swayed peacefully, soaking up the tones of Kaya’s voice. The soft guitar accompanied the vocal melodies beautifully.

Kaya filled the room with an upbeat spirit with “Psych Ward”. When she took out her guitar and started strumming, a wave of contagious energy washed over the crowd. Okay Kaya’s songs are deeply emotional, but her energy on stage is humble and lighthearted. When an audience member cried out, “Play ‘Overstimulated’”, she laughed, “Sure, we can do a little bit”, and chuckled warmly between verses as the girl sang the ad libs back to
her – an impromptu duet.

Overall, Okay Kaya offered a very warm energy which the audience reflected back. The atmosphere at Théâre Fairmount was incredibly positive and uplifting.
