Blues Dancing : Summer Classes
Hey everybody!
If you’d like to discover blues as a dance (because blues dancing is as old as the music genre itself), come take our summer classes at the Studio 88 Swing!
Sessions are comprised of 3 classes plus 1 assisted practice, over 4 weeks:
Struttin Blues – June 8th-29th : dance style from the 50s born in Memphis, traditionally danced on Delta blues of medium to fast tempo (think John Lee Hooker)
Piedmont Blues – July 6th-27th : Popular dance style from the early 1920s to 1970s, it comes from the Piedmont plateau, a large region from the US that extend from the East Coast to the Appalaches mountains. Danced on a variety of blues styles, from early acoustic delta blues to Chicago blues.
Texas Shuffle – August : This style was born in Texas, but is danced on a whole variety of Blues music genres, as long as you can hear a clear shuffle rhythm.

MONTREAL BLUES SOCIETY “QUEBEC TO MEMPHIS” CONTEST
The Montreal Blues Society is now accepting registrations for the Band category (three or more musicians) for the International Blues Challenge.
The 39th International Blues Challenge (IBC 2024) will be held January 16th through January 20th, 2024 in the Beale Street Historic District in Memphis. Acts sponsored by blues societies from around the world will vie for top spot at the largest gathering of blues musicians in the world.

The contest is open to all Quebec-based acts.
The registration period for the Band category is open from July 1st, 2023 until midnight August 13th, 2023. Requests to enter once the deadline has passed will be denied. The competition for the Band category will be held Tuesday, September 26th and Tuesday, October 3rd, 2023, in Montreal, at Bistro à JoJo, 1627 St-Denis. Time slots will be between 17:00 and 21:00. Acts must be available for the local competition date, and winners must be able to travel to the IBC in Memphis, January 16th through January 20th, 2024. If you can’t make these dates, please do not enter the competition.

Quebec acts have fared well in Memphis in the past, with semi-final appearances by Michael Jerome Browne, Dawn & Paul, and the Justin Saladino Band. The past editions have been particularly fruitful with finalist appearances three years in a row! A second-place finish by the Paul DesLauriers Band in 2016, then a first-place finish for Dawn Tyler Watson and The Ben Racine Band in 2017, Angel Forrest Band on stage with the 8 finalists in 2018 and best guitarist in the solo category for Adam Karch in 2023.

Winning is always nice but even if you don’t bring an award back home, the IBC event week is an experience, perfect for making contacts and connections as it offers seminars, showcases, master classes, film screenings, networking events, book signings, and receptions for blues societies, fans, and professionals.

BLUES SUMMIT 11 SHOWCASE APPLICATION
Applications for showcases at Blues Summit 11 are now open
To submit your application head over to our website. Acts may be solo, duo or band.
Priority will be given to “market ready” artists who have developed a team to assist their touring and career development.
We will continue to accept submissions until Sunday, October 1, 2023 5pm (EST). Selected artists will be contacted on October 10 2023.
Applicants must be available to showcase in Toronto February 9 – 11, 2024 between the hours of 8:00pm-1:00am.
Showcase slots will be 25 minutes total length.
