Elliot Family Production Internship 2026-2027

CKUT is hiring a production department intern - we're looking for someone who has some experience with creative hands-on audio projects and is looking to learn more about the field and get involved in community radio. Check out the details below:

As the Production Intern, you will work closely with the CKUT staff and volunteers to support studio operations, live broadcasts, digital production, and audio archiving, while learning how the station’s technical and broadcast systems function behind the scenes.

  • $20/hour for 12 hours per week
  • One year contract

CKUT 90.3 FM is a non-profit, grassroots campus-community radio station affiliated with McGill University and based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Broadcasting 24/7 on FM and online, CKUT supports hundreds of volunteers, artists, journalists and community members in producing independent, free-form radio. Since 1987, CKUT has provided a vital platform for alternative media, community storytelling and experimental sound– prioritizing voices historically underrepresented in mainstream media.

 

The Elliot Family Production Internship is a paid, year-long, hands-on learning opportunity embedded in the daily production life of the station. This junior role is ideal for someone eager to gain practical experience in radio production, broadcast technology, and community based media. The intern will receive ongoing mentorship while supporting CKUT’s production department, volunteers and audio projects.

 

Job Description:

The Production Intern will be part of the daily life and production cycle of CKUT — Radio McGill. This is a hands-on learning position that combines technical broadcast training, mentorship and direct support for CKUT’s volunteer base and community. The intern will gain experience in studio production, digital editing and audio archiving while also developing teaching and facilitation skills by training others. In addition to this, this intern will also be exposed to CKUT — Radio McGill’s technical infrastructure. Everything from troubleshooting studio equipment to learning about basic IT systems that support our broadcast and web presence.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Learn about and assist in the various technical systems at CKUT — Radio McGill, both in the audio world and in the IT (information technology) world.
  • Troubleshoot basic daily broadcast issues in studios and on digital systems
  • Train volunteers to use studios and portable recording equipment and other production tools
  • Train volunteers to record and edit digital audio for CKUT — Radio McGill projects
  • Support day-to-day production needs, including live broadcasts, podcast uploads, and remote recordings

 

Training and skills to be learned:

  • Broadcast and Studio Production: Running soundboards, managing live shows and maintaining broadcast flow Audio
  • Editing & Mixing: Using industry-standard tools to produce clean, organized and professional audio.
  • Field Recording: Capturing community events, live performances and interviews outside of the studio
  • Archiving: Organizing, preserving and maintaining an extensive audio archive
  • Project Development: Supporting special projects like documentaries

 

Learning Outcomes:

Over the year they spend with us at CKUT — Radio McGill the intern will:

  • Be given the rare opportunity to contribute behind-the-scenes to a large-scale community project, gaining experience in broadcast production, studio production, digital audio recording/editing, technical website systems, and FM radio technology.
  • Learn basic IT (information technology) and technical broadcast skills and systems management that keep a station going on a day-to-day basis.
  • Meet monthly with CKUT — Radio McGill’s collective management team for check-ins and mentorship, while also playing an active role in the daily operations of the station.
  • Contribute their perspectives to the station’s long-term visioning, particularly in the areas related to broadcasting, studio use, studio and equipment upgrades, training procedures, and community audio projects.
  • Build strong connections with hundreds of volunteers and artists, collaborating each week on creative audio and community projects.

This role involves hands-on technical work in radio studios and extended use of computers and audio equipment.
