Small Little Foot Soldiers: A People’s History of the Anti-Apartheid Movement in Canada
Small Little Foot Soldiers is a 5-part audio documentary series based on over 50 interviews collected over several years with former anti-apartheid activists from across the country. This series by CKUT FM’s Amandla! Radio Collective brings critical reflection on movement building for today’s struggles.
When Nelson Mandela died, members of the political elite in Canada rushed to take credit for playing a role in ending the odious system of apartheid. But the story is more complicated, and much more beautiful than that. Indeed, it was regular Canadians from coast to coast to coast, student organizers, union activists, members of churches and women’s groups and so many others – what one activist referred to as a string of pearls across the country – who drove the divestment campaigns, the demands for sanctions, the boycotts of South African products. Who built the Canadian anti-apartheid movement.
