CKUT is Hiring: Volunteer Coordinator

CKUT is seeking a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator to join our dynamic team. The Volunteer Coordinator will play a pivotal role in recruiting, training, and supporting volunteers who contribute to our station’s mission of promoting diverse voices and independent media. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with a vibrant community of volunteers from a variety of diverse backgrounds and lived experiences, while helping to shape the future of a Montreal cultural institution.

The Volunteer Coordinator (VC) is a part-time contract position (20 hrs weekly at $28.00/hr, for 12 months). It includes two weeks paid vacation, Winter Break, 10 sick days and 3 personal days. 

This hands-on role requires all hours to be worked in-person at CKUT’s headquarters, located at 3647 University St. in downtown Montreal, situated on the traditional territory of the Kanien’kehà:ka. Accessibility note: CKUT’s offices are located up one flight of 14 steps of stairs with a small landing in between, while the broadcast studios are on the ground floor.  Please note that this role will require heavy in-person availability during the weekdays and is not ideal/feasible for individuals with full-time school, work, or other full-time commitments. 

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement volunteer engagement strategies, including attending recruitment events, to attract and retain a diverse pool of volunteers
  • Coordinate and conduct station tours, volunteer orientation sessions, and provide ongoing support to volunteers,
  • Collaborate with staff to match volunteers with appropriate roles based on skills and interests to ensure adequate coverage for station activities and projects,
  • Strategize for new volunteer management systems and workflows which optimize volunteer engagement,
  • Organize skill-building workshops and volunteer appreciation events,
  • Stay informed about station programs and initiatives to effectively communicate opportunities to volunteers,
  • Create and distribute volunteer communications such as the volunteer newsletter, volunteer-related social media posts, etc. 

 

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Education and/or experience in communications, project or nonprofit management, community development, or related fields,
  • Proven experience in volunteer coordination or management, preferably in a nonprofit or community organization setting.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and respond to communications promptly. 
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team, demonstrating flexibility and initiative.
  • Proficiency in Google Suite and database management.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion principles in volunteer management.
  • Passion for community radio and the station’s mission of promoting alternative voices and perspectives.
  • Understanding of volunteer engagement strategies and best practices. 

 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a radio or media environment, especially at CKUT or a similar environment (nonprofit, campus and/or community media),
  • Familiarity with audio editing software and broadcast equipment,
  • Experience with event planning and coordination,
  • Experience and/or training with interpersonal/conflict resolution.
